The way I figure it is that if people choose to send gifts before the wedding, then they must want me to have them before the wedding. Also it's my personal policy that it's ok to use them as long as I send thank-you notes right away, which I do. By the way, it's also poor etiquette to post rude things anonymously. Love ya!
