Hooray!

Registering for gifts is weird. You feel like a rude jerk telling people what to buy…and then you resent it if they buy something that wasn’t on the registry and is very different from your personal taste. It’s confusing. Anyway, there’s this store in town called Akar that I really love, and we registered with them. Some of their stuff is outrageously expensive, but a lot of it is reasonably priced, too. We tried to mostly pick reasonably priced stuff. Nobody really needs a $300 watering can, sez me.

They got our wedding registry online. I really hope people use it; they have absolutely gorgeous things, just fabulous. You can’t actually buy online, but they have a little link on there where you fill in what you want to buy, and they contact you and can have it shipped. So it’s sort of like online shopping. You can go to the actual store, too.

It’s loads better than Target. Registering there was kind of frustrating, since they’re not very experienced in that process, but I really hope it works out, both for locals and long-distance people. If it doesn’t, well, we’ll probably just go buy the stuff ourselves.

Happy Friday

Hello, chums.

I just had an opportunity to hang out with the delightful Holly and Daphne, who dropped by the office to visit their husband and father, respectively. Daphne is getting so big I can hardly believe it. She had just come back from Kindermusik (do they spell it German-style?) and was feeling very chatty. She showed me her zebra, passed it around for people to hug, and let us know that it needed its nails clipped. She also counted to ten in English and Spanish. She’s brilliant and adorable.

My first bridal shower is this weekend, which I’m looking forward too. I’m also a little nervous about it, because I’m not very comfortable being the center of attention. That’s hard for people to understand sometimes, because I have a lot of theater background and sort of a performative personality, but for some reason it feels very different for me to be on a stage performing than to be in a social situation. I get shy and uncomfortable. One thing I really admire about Denny is the ease with which he talks to people. I’m just not as good at it. I never know what to say, and I’m always worried that I’m accidentally offending people. Sometimes in my anxiety, I just blurt things out to fill silence, and sometimes I wish I’d thought a little more before speaking.

I’m probably making a skyscraper out of a buttcheek, though. I bet it will be fun. It’s very nice of Denny’s aunts to throw this for me, and parties are usually pleasant, especially ones that are dedicated to eating treats and opening presents. Nothing wrong with that!

In bug-related news: there was a small-yet-scary bug in the shower this morning. I don’t usually kill bugs unless they’re doing something bad to me (like mosquitoes) or are really, really scary (like the giant centipede I had a nightmare about a while back). So I tried to flick it off the shower wall and wash it down the drain. I figured it might have a sporting chance in the sewers or where ever it is shower water goes. So I flicked it, but it stuck. It was a tenacious little bugger. I’m not finding a picture of it on Google Images, but it was about half an inch long and had pincers on its back end (which seemed a little weird).

I flicked it and flicked it some more, but it clung to the shower walls. So I smooshed it with toilet paper. I had to smoosh it really hard, too, because it was pretty tough. I kind of felt bad.

But seriously, one cannot be expected to shower with butt-pincer beetles. That is really beyond the pale.
