Beach vacation in January in Iowa

Poor Miles is back in the hospital due to high bilirubin levels (jaundice). He’s right on the borderline, but since he was early and has lost some weight, they want to keep a close eye on him.

His eye protection goggles make him look like a tiny Batman.

I was all freaked out about it, but the staff here has been really reassuring. I think I was mostly upset because I haven’t had a good night’s sleep in over a week (not that I’ll be getting one of those any time soon), my hormones are all outrageous, and, you know, he’s my baby. But they tell me it’s really common, really treatable, and tends to run in families. I personally had jaundice as a baby. I don’t remember it. It was probably the best tan I ever had in my life.

Miles actually seems to like it under the lamps. He’s all splayed out and chilling like he’s at the beach.

Poor little guy. Love the name. A friend of mine had a baby on Dec 28th and their names choices were between Ansel and Miles. While I adore photography, I was pulling for “Miles.” They chose Ansel. Anyway… that jaundice stuff is no fun. Ainsley had it for a long, long time. The whites of her eyes were yellow until she was almost 10 weeks old. Here’s hoping baby Miles kicks that tan quickly. I’m glad to know you also don’t have any lasting mental scars from your jaundice experience.

A whole lot of full term babies I know get all jaundicy and have to go back in to the hospital for a bit and every one of them has come out looking nice and pale. Not to worry, though I know that’s not really possible to say to new parents.

My niece had the same thing and she was full term. I know it’s nerve wracking though, but he will be just fine. *hug*

All 3 of mine had jaundice too. We had to sit them outside in their carseats like little houseplants for 10 min at a time. 🙂 I’m glad he’s doing well!

Olivia was in the same boat. The hospital gave us a “bili blanket” that we got to take home. We stripped her down to a diaper and swaddled her in this tin foil-looking thing, plugged it into a unit that resembled a small vacuum and turned it on. It glowed from the light on the inside. Seemed very Star Trek at the time. This is very common and overall isn’t a big deal, although I do recall thinking it was at the time. Consider it one of the small challenges that gets you ready for some of the more challenging challenges. Case in point, we just had a six-girl 10-year old birthday party sleep over last night.

Yeah, my boss’ baby was readmitted because of that and she was pretty fully baked.

I love the idea of him lounging at the beach getting his tan on 🙂
