Bite one’s tongue

Whenever I read recipes that mention chopping something, I imagine chopping my own tongue on the cutting board.

That image never pops into my head when I’m actually cooking, just reading.

What’s wrong with my brain?

Wow, that’s weird. To me, at least. I’m trying to think if I have a similar sort of mental connection to anything in the kitchen….. I guess our super-sharp peeler gives me the willies sometimes.

Is there a name for it when you have a recurrent grisly image that haunts you for no understandable reason? Mine is jumping onto a bed only to realize mid-flight that there is a knife nestled in the bedcovers, pointing up (why?)

True story: when I was many years younger and just learning how to shave my legs, I gave my razor a firm swipe straight up my shin and accidentally shaved off a length of skin at least a few inches long. Bled like crazy.

Perhaps your brain is subtlety trying to get you to broaden your culinary horizons?

I’m very glad you don’t work around heavy machinery!
