Modern civilization r we

For as technologically hip as Denny and I usually are, we’ve really lagged behind in the entertainment technology field.  But just as day or two ago, we joined the dark (light?) side.  We ordered a Tivo and signed up for Netflix.

We don’t get out to movies very often, partly because of how expensive they are and partly because nothing’s ever playing at 8:00.  8:00 is exactly when I want to watch a movie.  7 is too early; we’re still winding down from work and dinner and exercise and all the evening stuff at that time.  9 is getting a little late, especially on a weeknight, because I am a wussy and get a great thrill from being asleep by 10:30 (in my own defense, I have been getting up early and exercising).

So, since we don’t get out to the movies much, we don’t see a lot of the films we’d like to, and Netflix seems like a good way to manage it.

The Tivo is just for the hell of it.  To be embarrassingly honest, what put me over the edge was Lifetime changing their schedule so that Golden Girls is on during the day when I’m at work instead of at night when I’m home.  I just don’t feel right without my regular doses of Rose being dumb, Blanche being slutty, Sophia being spunky, and Dorothy being mannish.

YOU SHALL BE MINE AGAIN!

Welcome to the dark side. It’s nice here. Those of us who are disciples would like to know: Series 2 or 3? 3 discs at once, or more?

Tivo is awesome! It brings me Lost and Whose Line Is It Anyway? You’ll like it. Also, I know other people who have secret Golden Girl addictions, so don’t feel bad about it. 😀

8pm is a bad time for theaters, especially single-screen theaters like the Bijou, IC’s only non-profit theater and the only screen of the 26 in town not owned by the same company. 8 p.m. means only being able to do one show a night (at least on weeknights), which doesn’t cut it with high film rental costs, etc.

Anyway, enjoy Netflix… but don’t forget that some movies are worth seeing in the theater. It doens’t do a whole lot for film art or culture if everyone’s holed up in their homes watching DVDs, iPods, etc.

By the way, the new Bijou opens in January in the IMU.

It’s definitely an interesting topic, the idea of film as a social experience rather than an information-out experience.
For example, an important part of my Borat-viewing adventure was gasping at the same time as a whole lot of other people.

I do need to go to the Bijou more. I like the Bijou. I’ve seen some great films there. What’s so new about it? Is the space improved?

Danny> we got a series 2 dual tuner Tivo. We’re starting out on a modest Netflix plan, just 2 a month, but if we find we’re going through them voraciously, we may change. This is a lot of new stuff at once, you know. We’re eeeaaaasing in.

Lisa> Thank you for your support. 🙂

The Bijou’s home will be the former Terrace Room, currently being renovated as part of the larger IMU Renovation. It will be renamed Bijou Theater. Some highlights include Dolby Digital Surround Sound, screen masking and curtains, newer seating, acoustical treatments, etc. It’s really going to be night and day over the old space. Not perfect, but a BIG step forward in the right direction.

I wonder if the producers of The Golden Girls ever could’ve guessed that their show would one day spur the sales of video recording devices.
