Baby art

I was thinking I might make an effort to not make this blog too pregnancy-centric, because much like one’s dreams, one’s fetus is probably a lot more interesting to oneself than one’s readers.

But…you know…it’s what’s on my mind. I like to look through my archives sometimes and see what I was thinking about on this day a year ago (answer: the weather and plane tickets), and it would be silly to not write about something I’m thinking about just because I’m worried people will get bored with it. It’s a big internet. If you don’t like what’s here, go watch some YouTube or something.

So!

I am not a very good interior decorator. I think of myself as someone with decent aesthetic sense, but when it comes to decorating a room, I get frozen and have no idea where to start. This creates a problem when trying to figure out what to do with the baby’s future room. Then I was doing some surfing yesterday and came across the website WeeGallery.com. It’s this artwork that is cool in its own right, but is also purposely made so baby brains will be able to see it and find it interesting. Denny really liked it too, so we ordered some of the canvases. Here’s what we’re getting:

It’s not a full decorating scheme yet, but at least it will give us something to start from in terms of paint colors and furniture and stuff. I just noticed that it looks like the pig has some kind of skin disease. I think it’s because the artist thinks babies like repeating patterns. I wonder if that’s going to bug me now.

The pigs friends were probably just rolling around in the dirt beside him and splashed him.

Those are very cool. They remind me of the sheets I had when I was a kid.

I was actually wondering just yesterday about the relative dearth of pregnancy-related posts on the blog (to date). I guess I’ve always thought of this blog as being about you, primarily, so it makes sense to me that we’d read lots about whatever it is that’s foremost in your mind. Had I a little being growing in my belly, I think I’d find it rather consuming…in all sorts of ways.

congratulations! (really late). i just remembered that at one point when you tutored me, you drew a uterus and named it the uterus alien. i don’t know why i thought of that

You mean you don’t find my recent dream of driving a miniature blue Beetle car fascinating??

I like that animal art, it’s cute. I like colorful things, it looks like from Tiny Eyes that though babies don’t see sharply for a while, they can still see some colors, or at least see light and dark blobs. So yeah, I guess contrasting things would be visually interesting? From what I know about babies – which isn’t THAT much – they rely a lot on touch. So I’d suggest creating an environment for Your Baby that’s also tactilely interesting – smooth things, plush things, silky, nubby, etc. Especially when they get to the age when they reach for everything and start to crawl around.

Also, An Interesting Thing I Learned About Babies In Elementary Psychology:
    (1) Babies are able to distinguish among all phonemes and sounds of any human language, but as they reach one year of age, their brains commit to the language in which they are being raised and lose the ability to hear phoneme differences not in their native language. Like adult native Japanese speakers can’t hear the difference between “r” and “l,” but their babies still can!

Don’t worry about writing too much about your pregnancy. There are many, many Mom blogs out there that are very popular. Dooce created a whole career from talking about her pregnancy, mental health, and motherhood. Not everyone is bored with the topic. I may be a bit biased since I mostly write about my own child.

Fact: I am really curious about a lot of the aspects of the pregnancy because you’re the first person that I know who I don’t think of as, like, young and irresponsible who is not a lot older than me who is having a baby. So, feel free to write all you’d like, as far as I’m concerned. It fascinates!

    Guess what Aprille?
I’m sixteen weeks pregnant and I just read your blog to find out that you are as well…
    Weird.
We were married around the same time and now we’re gonna have monkeys around the same age.

That’s awesome, KatyO! Are you going to UIHC? Maybe we’ll run into each other in the waiting room.

My due date is January 29th. I’m going Mercy because when I was at my friend Sara’s delivery they made her put her clothes on and sent her home… maybe ten minutes later she gave birth to her daughter. They had to rush her back on the table (she wasn’t moving very fast because she was in labor and all). Can you imagine?
I know they do the prayer thing over the intercom but Mercy is much more comfortable and they send you home with an awesome sippy cup.
    😉

hey, i’m making you a quilt. its bright rainbow, not because babies are totally gay (jk i hope you understand and that didnt just make me sound like a jackass) but because i think that pastel duckies arent very visually stimulating to babies(especially if they just see big blobs for the most part anyways). you will like it. send me your address (it won’t be done for a while/ maybe not such a long while as i am pretty excited about having a project) at fakehouseplant@hotmail.com
