Nerds r00l

If you noticed that my site was down or weird for an hour or two last night, it’s because I finally got around to upgrading my blogging software. I was (embarrassingly) still at WordPress 1.2, and last night I upgraded to 1.5. I may well upgrade to 1.5.2 later tonight; their support site recommended going to 1.5 first. You will likely not notice any change, but it should afford me better spam controls and a general sense of well-being.

I was also reminded of the fact that while I do enjoy a little recreational programming, I’m really glad that Denny’s the one who does it for a career and not me. There was this one little line of code that kept hosing me, and I had neither the patience nor the attention to detail to figure out which line it was and what the problem was. Luckily, Denny was able to solve it for me.

Denny is currently very interested in something called version control. To be quite honest, I don’t really know what it is. I do know that last night before we went to sleep, I was reading a cheesy horror novel about slimy little creatures that feed on human blood, and he was reading this thick, boring-looking article that had to be held together with one of those giant clip things.

I felt bad for him that he had to read such a boring article (purely recreational, by the way, though it may affect his work somehow), so I made him sing “Like a Version” with me. It went like this:

Like a version
Controlled for the very first time.
Like a veeeeeeeersion

I can’t remember the rest, because he went on and used some terms I didn’t know.

He is my nerd boy and I love him.

Hey, just in time for WordPress 2.0! But seriously, now you need to look into the Akismet plugin. It has solved all my spammy woes. Then again, I don’t get anyone commenting on my blog but map, so.

Gary: I think Denny doesn’t like CVS…he was dogging on it the other day, but I don’t remember why or what he prefers.

Danny: Ken is all excited about Spam Karma, which I may look into once I upgrade a level. Have you seen that? And yes, I noticed WordPress 2.0 on the horizon. I figured it would be easier to go from 1.5 (or 1.5.2 or wherever I end up in the near future) to 2.0 than trying to make the leap from 1.2. We’ll see how it goes…

For the record, I like Subversion. CVS is classic, but Subversion is CVS++.

  4. Gary Rogers says:

If Denny is interested in CVS, I’d be happy to give him tips. We just started using it.

[Note: this is Aprille trying to reconstruct the comment I accidentally deleted. Sorry, I’m still getting used to the new controls.]

I want to know the rest of the words to “Like a Version,” because I’ve had it in my head all day. Just the first three lines, though. 🙂

[Note: this is Aprille trying to reconstruct the comment, which I accidentally deleted. I WILL BEAT THIS.]

Given the relatively low number of people who comment (and I mean relative to, say, Digg or Slashdot), perhaps you should consider restricting comments to registered users? The WP registration process is pretty darn painless, after all. It would beat waging this war you’re having with the spammers.

In annoying song news, for some reason your “Like a Virgin” homage has triggered a really frustrating memory of that “Where the Hood at” / “Karma Chameleon” mashup from TV.

  7. Aprille says:

I dunno, map. I thought I was registered at your site, but every time I try to comment I get thwarted. It’s scared me off. Do I have to register separately for the comments? I can get into your restricted pictures zone fine (much less exciting than you probably think, peanut gallery).

  8. map says:

You’re registered for the gallery, not the blog. Since user registration and management is handled a bit differently between WP and G2, I’ve left them separate.

Were you registered for the blog, you’d see hidden posts when you logged in. It’s a handy way to keep Ava-related posts and pictures from prying eyes (again, nothing very exciting to anyone outside our family and (some of our) friends).

Congrats, BTW, on your upgrade. Baby steps….

  9. Danny says:

The best of both worlds is available: Akismet comes as a plugin for Spam Karma 2. Woot!

  10. Aprille says:

Are you patronizing me, map? Patronizing me makes the baby Jesus cry.

  11. map says:

Of course not. We can’t have baby Jesus crying this time of year….

I have to say, this feature list for WP 2.0 is pretty cool. Guess it’s coming out 12/26/05.
